Acoustical ceiling takeoff, tile to hanger wire
Momo reads the reflected ceiling plans, verifies scale, fills every ceiling by type, traces wall angle, and turns each area into tile, mains, cross tees and hanger wire through visible formulas. Nothing counts until you commit it.
- Areas · Lengths · Counts
- Ceilings, wall angle and grid penetrations
- Every line sourced
- Sheet, scale and formula on each quantity

What does a full acoustical ceiling takeoff in DrawScale include?
A full acoustical ceiling takeoff in DrawScale fills every ceiling area by type and turns it into tile and suspension system quantities. Momo reads the ceiling legend on the reflected ceiling plans, such as ACT-1: 2' × 2' square-edge mineral fiber on 15/16" grid at 9'-0" AFF. It fills each room or zone as an area tagged with that type and traces the room perimeter for wall angle. Formulas turn area into tiles, main runners, 4' and 2' cross tees and hanger wires at the specified spacing. Fixtures, diffusers and access panels in the grid are counted. Spacing, waste and rates are labeled assumptions, and everything carries into the priced estimate.

What Momo takes off for acoustical ceiling contractors
Every item is measured on the sheet as a count, a length or an area. Formulas then turn that measurement into the quantities you price. The sheets listed are typical; Momo reports the exact sheets it used for every quantity.
| Takeoff item | Measured as | Typical sheets | Outputs and formula |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ceiling area by type | Area | A-121 to A-124, A-125 | Tiles = SF ÷ tile SF × waste; grid by module |
| Main runners and cross tees | Area | Derived from ceiling areas | Mains LF = SF ÷ 4; 4' tees = SF ÷ 8; 2' tees = SF ÷ 8 (2 × 2 grid) |
| Hanger wire | Area | Derived from ceiling areas | Wires = SF ÷ 16 at 4' o.c. along mains |
| Wall angle | Length | A-121 to A-124 | Wall angle LF from room perimeters; pieces by stock length |
| Light fixtures and air devices in the grid | Count | A-121 to A-124, E3.1, M-101 | Tile cutouts and seismic wires per fixture |
| Cloud and specialty ceilings | Area | A-121 to A-125 | Panel SF and perimeter trim LF |

Worked example: ACT-1 on Level 1
This is an illustrative example of how a DrawScale quantity is built. Each line shows its formula, and anything that depends on a rate, factor or spacing is marked as an assumption for you to confirm.
2' × 2' square-edge mineral fiber tile on 15/16" exposed grid, 9'-0" AFF
A-121 Level 1 Reflected Ceiling Plan at 1/8" = 1'-0" and legend on A-125
| Line | Formula | Result |
|---|---|---|
| ACT-1 areas filled | Sum of ceilings tagged ACT-1 | 6,240 SF |
| Tiles | 6,240 SF ÷ 4 SF × 1.05 wasteAssumption · confirm | 1,638 tiles |
| Main runners | 6,240 ÷ 4 ft spacing = 1,560 LF ÷ 12 ft | 130 pcs |
| 4' and 2' cross tees | 6,240 ÷ 8 each | 780 + 780 pcs |
| Hanger wires | 6,240 ÷ 16 SF per wire, spacing per specAssumption · confirm | 390 EA |

How Momo runs a ceiling takeoff
Every ceiling by type, and every grid piece that follows from it.
- 01
Fills ceilings by type
Each ceiling is filled as an area and tagged with its legend type, so tile and grid price separately for each system.
Type on every area - 02
Traces wall angle
Room perimeters become wall angle lengths, including soffits and height changes on the reflected ceiling plan.
Perimeters measured - 03
Derives tile, grid and wire
Formulas turn area into tiles, mains, cross tees and hanger wire at the module and spacing you confirm.
Visible formulas - 04
Reports coverage
Momo records which RCPs it searched and what it skipped, so a missed floor shows up as a gap, not a zero.
Coverage on every sheet
What Momo checks for
Where ceiling takeoffs go wrong
Ceiling scopes are simple per room and easy to get wrong across a building.
Ceiling types that change room to room
ACT-1 in offices, ACT-2 in corridors and a moisture-resistant tile in toilet rooms. One blended area prices all of them wrong.
Heights and soffits on other sheets
Ceiling heights live in RCP tags and sections. Soffits and height changes add wall angle and framing that a flat area misses.
Fixtures and diffusers in the grid
Lights and diffusers come from the electrical and mechanical sheets, and each one needs cutouts or seismic wires.
Grid components estimated by feel
Mains, tees and hanger wire follow directly from area and module, but they are often guessed as a ratio.
From quantities to a bid
The priced estimate, schedule and export
Committed quantities flow into the estimate worksheet through visible formulas, and every unit rate, waste factor and production rate is labeled as an assumption to confirm. Nothing Momo proposed counts toward a total until you review and commit it.
Bid-stage schedule
The bid-stage schedule groups quantities into activities such as wall angle and hanger wire, grid by floor, and tile after above-ceiling work. Each duration is installed quantity divided by a labeled production rate you confirm, leveled to your crews, with a critical path and P50 and P80 finish dates.
Coming from another takeoff tool?
If you take off today in Bluebeam Revu, PlanSwift, On-Screen Takeoff or a spreadsheet, DrawScale opens the same PDF plan sets in the browser with nothing to install. Manual count, linear and area tools always work, and changing a sheet’s scale flags every quantity that depends on it.
What you hand your chief estimator
- A ledger of committed quantities, each linked to its sheet, scale and traced geometry
- A priced estimate worksheet with visible formulas and every rate labeled as an assumption to confirm
- A bid-stage schedule built from installed quantity divided by a labeled production rate
- An Excel or CSV export with audit columns that contains committed quantities only
Acoustical Ceiling takeoff and estimating FAQ
Direct answers for acoustical ceiling contractors.
Grid comes from visible formulas on the ceiling area. For a 2 × 2 grid with mains at 4' o.c., mains are area divided by 4 in LF, and 4' and 2' cross tees are each area divided by 8 in pieces. The module and spacing are labeled assumptions you confirm.
Yes. Hanger wire count is ceiling area divided by the area each wire supports, such as 16 SF for wires at 4' o.c. along mains at 4' o.c. The spacing is a labeled assumption you set from the spec.
Yes. Momo reads the ceiling legend and tags each filled area with its type, so each tile and grid system totals and prices on its own line.
Yes. Momo counts fixtures and air devices that sit in the grid, from the reflected ceiling plans and the electrical and mechanical sheets, so cutouts and seismic wires can be priced.
Yes. Ceilings, partitions and gypsum soffits can all live in one DrawScale project, each with its own takeoff items and formulas.
You get committed quantities linked to their sheets, a priced estimate worksheet, a bid-stage schedule and an Excel or CSV export with audit columns. The export contains committed quantities only.
